In compliance with URP-SP vision 2035, that is “to be a world-class study program in urban and regional planning field in Asia which focuses on spatial engineering based on moral values of democracy, equality, empowerment, justice, and balance for sustainability and the glory of human civilization”, research and knowledge development becomes one of fundamental elements to lead URP community to achieve its vision. Moreover, by referring to its mission, research activities and knowledge development is an inevitable consequence that must be conducted by all URP community as a realization of its commitment to conduct high quality education and bridge the gap between planning theory and practice in urban and regional planning field.

Laboratories are responsible for developing research skill of academic staff. Each laboratory prepares research agenda, and all laboratory members are required to be engaged in the research. Research collaboration between senior staff and junior staff are also encouraged. In addition, URP-SP also provides an opportunity for its staff to improve their skills in planning practice by joining research, advocacy, and planning consultation services facilitated by the Center for Regional Development Planning Study (PSPPR) Universitas Gadjah Mada.
